What is the difference between Traditional and Gestational Surrogacy?
Gestational Surrogacy: This is accomplished through In Vitro Fertilization. Eggs are retrieved from the Recipient Mother or an Egg Donor and fertilized with the sperm of the Recipient Father or a sperm donor. The resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus of the Surrogate.
For gestational surrogacy, the surrogate will more than likely begin taking birth control pills to align her cycle with that of the recipient mother or the egg donor. At the appropriate time, she will begin taking Lupron, a subcutaneous drug that suppresses ovulation, estrogen to prepare her uterine lining for embryo implantation and progesterone to help nourish the baby and maintain the pregnancy during the first trimester. At this time, her hormone levels will be monitored by blood tests. There will also be ultrasounds to be sure that the uterine lining is developing to the optimum thickness. Normally, somewhere between 3 and 5 days after fertilizing the egg and sperm, the endocrinologist will transfer a pre-determined number of embryos into the Surrogate’s uterus. This is a painless procedure and it only takes a matter of minutes. After the transfer, she will remain at the clinic for an hour or two. When the surrogate returns home, she will generally be placed on bed rest for 2-3 days. About 2 weeks later, a blood test will determine whether or not a pregnancy has been achieved.
*Please note that each clinic has different protocols regarding the types of medications that they use and how much. There are a variety of administration methods for supplemental estrogen and progesterone. They come in oral pills, patches, suppositories, and intramuscular injections.
Traditional Surrogacy: Traditional surrogacy is achieved through Artificial Insemination (AI). The sperm of the Recipient Father or Sperm Donor is placed into the vaginal canal or directly into the uterus (Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI) of the surrogate. Being that the surrogate is using her own eggs, this genetically links her to the child.
Medications may or may not be used.
Once we sign with your agency, how long until we are matched?
Fortunately, we do not currently have a waiting list. We can normally have you matched quickly. However you may have specific preferences (normally with traditional surrogacy) that will make the matching process take a little longer.
How much interaction do the Surrogate and Intended Parents have?
This is entirely up to you and your surrogate. A lot of IP’s prefer to be heavily involved by contacting their surrogate on a regular basis via phone calls/emails. They expect to be very involved by going with the surrogate to doctor’s appointments, sonogram appointments, etc. However, there are a lot of IP’s and surrogates that wish to have more of a business type arrangement These IP’s only wish to have occasional phone calls or emails with their surrogate to discuss how the pregnancy is progressing. Upon enrolling in our surrogacy program, you will fill out an Intended Parent application. That application asks the type of relationship that you would like to have with your surrogate. Depending on your answer, we will match you accordingly.
Do you work with International Clients?
